Sound Effects...

cruise (July 11th, 2002, 3:22 pm)

I've just had my computer re-installed at work, so I'm having to re-install my software currently.

It also means I lost my cool New Mail SFX (kid's voice going "You've got mail" in a really surprised tone). Any suggestions for good things to use? Or places to find them. I remember trawling through tonnes last time looking, and none were really what I wanted...

Not that I do know what I want, until I hear it :/

Needs to be short, I don't mind whether it uses words or not, and it musn't ever get reptitive (obviously). And no faux-sexy female voices, please.

If you find/know of a decent (ie, not tacky) computer voice thing, though, that would be cool. Sound effects from the Lain anime would be most appreciated (as my computer at work is called NAVI :P), but anything vageuly similar is good enough.

Or, as I say, just tell me were to look... :P

As a matter of fact... I am a sound guy. =) I have gigs of random wave files on my drive, some of which I've had for 5 years, and have not heard in about as long. :) I have about 100 megs of waves that have been mixed and customized for use with computers (i.e. ME, as currently only one other person uses my wave set)...

Just to continue on in my ramblings, I have one startup sound that I'm especially proud of, taken from "Overture" to The Phantom of The Opera. It consists of 2 clips taken from the beginning, one from somewhere near the end, and the other from the last. Combined with some creative mixing and assisted with a few touches from an EQ, it's quite awesome, especially if you have good speakers - It's a Pipe Organ, heavy on the bass, and the EQ amplifies that... :))

Anyhow, you want Lain sounds? Send me the DVD's and I'll get you all the sounds you want. :) I rip audio from DVD's all the time. As for a computer voice, your best bet is a Vocoder (which I also have), which can get you really cool effects for just about any voice.

As for finding them, try ICQ sound schemes. You have to install them to unpack the waves, but you can get some good sounds there. Otherwise, it's hard. You can browse for hours on wave-file sites and not find ANYTHING good.

Try your games... Scour the directories and see if there are MP3 or WAV files, unless you have an audio program that can open more types (VOC, AU, etc). Black and White has some good ones.

If you mess with UnrealEd you can extract some real honeys of sound files... :) The rifle and the shell bounce sounds are especially cool.

And, again, if you have an audio editing program, you can take clips from CDs or MP3s... You just have to have a good ear for fades and such.

And there's always the Bell Labs or AT&T TTS demos. I don't have links, but Google can find them. :) Google can find anything.

If you want, I can encode some of my files in OGG or MP3 and email them to you for examination, I suppose.

But I still like the idea of borrowing your Lain discs. :))

I'm sure you do... :D

Thanks for the tips...I'd /love/ to hear that start up sound sometime :P

I'll check out ICQ and Windows is likely they'll have the best stuff...

Thanks for the suggestions :P

Navi? Then you could get the voice of Link's fairy from Ocarina of Time. "Hey...Listen!!!" Hehe, real cute.

Cause the fairy is named Navi.

Lain sounds

Semirrahge (September 9th, 2002, 3:17 pm)

Ok, Cruise... I have Lain 01 rented. As this is my first viewing, my head is still spinning a bit. What exactly would you like?

Some of my ideas were:

The sound of a door (repeated several times, but there's one in particular that I liked. I think it was in Layer 03.)

The sound of that laser thing switching on in the black car.

Misc Navi sounds (beeps, clicks, hums - Including the super-upgraded navi noises).

Various music clips (Some from the Cyberia, the chorus of the opening song, something from the closing song, and maybe that piano note from Layer 04).

I also thought about taking some one-liners, but... I watched it subbed, so the Jap audio might be a bit strange. :) However, I think I'm learning Japanese from all this anime. :)

Anyhow, let me know if you have any ideas. I have enough hard drive space for one Layer, but not all four, so I can't just rip it and return the DVD.

real head-churner ain't it?

cruise (September 9th, 2002, 5:29 pm)

Friend and I watchedthe whole series in one sitting.

Does funny things to your head that... :P

Mainly the NAVI voice sounds were what I was the original japanese would be even funkier :P

I don't bother with most sounds...just new email/IM only about 3 or 4 good, short sounds are required :P

I did find some good ones for my computer at work, which if anybody else wants I can dig out for ya...

Two things:

Two things I wanted to say:

1. Did you get a cool "you've got mail" sound, Cruise? If you did can you send it to me too? :D

Since I have hotmail, and I doubt it'll fit there, just send it on my moms account (she's the one that wants it). ;-)

2. Look at the title of your post, I think your "title bug" fix has missed a bit.. :-

Happy fraggin'!

okey dokey

cruise (September 10th, 2002, 12:36 pm)

all the sound files I'd found...named for the sound, rather than the use, so do what you will with them :P

And for some reason, I always think the encoding for an apostrophe is ' and it never works, I have to change it, then I do it again somewhere else. It's damned annoying :P

Hellkeepa (September 11th, 2002, 9:29 pm)

Thanks a lot, I'll be browsing through the file and see if I find some cool sounds. :)

Happy fraggin'!
