A Beautiful Mind

Semirrahge (August 18th, 2002, 11:16 pm)

Anyone seen this movie? I saw it and, being interested in people and good stories, was instantly fascinated with it.

I'd like to discuss a few things if you have, but I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

A Beautiful Mind

I know the story...not seen the film.

Where, how?

Hellkeepa (August 19th, 2002, 10:24 am)

HELLo!

Where did you see it, you got me quite interested in it now. ;-)

(Always been a sucker for stories about people, and the psychology behind us. :-) )

Happy fraggin'!

Yes, I've seen it

Ben (August 19th, 2002, 1:02 pm)

Great movie, though it did stray from the (true) story it was based on a fair amount.

Hmm.

Semirrahge (August 19th, 2002, 7:41 pm)

Well... Maybe I should read the book then, before I go off on tangents. :)

Hellkeepa, I saw it here, at my house. I wish now that I'da seen it in the theatres, but... Then again, maybe its good that the only person who saw me cry was my friend. ;P

Ben, Cruise: How much different was it from the real thing?

Hmm.

Eldritch (August 19th, 2002, 8:56 pm)

My faher read the book. I just saw the movie. He says the story is VERY different from the movie.

I see..

Hellkeepa (August 20th, 2002, 12:00 pm)

HELLo!

Hmmm... So those of you who have seen the film and read the book, what should I do:

1. Read the book and forget about the film?

2. See the film and forget about the book? (Yeah, as if)

3. Both?

Semirrage: Hmm.. So I should clear out the house before seeing it then, considering I've always had a soft spot for empathy. ;-)

Happy fraggin'!

er...

cruise (August 20th, 2002, 12:09 pm)

"I know the story...not seen the film."

Therefore, I haven't a clue how different it is from what happened :P

er...

Ben (August 20th, 2002, 7:41 pm)

heh. I haven't read the book, actually, just articles on it. Apparently he didn't go to princeton for very long, and his hallucinations were a bit more disjointed than as they were portrayed in the movie. I think they did what they had to to make a good film; I'd still see it.

Well, then...

Semirrahge (August 20th, 2002, 7:57 pm)

Hellkeepa; If you are like me - a sucker for honest empathy - then, yeah. I felt like sobbing during the movie, both from agony and joy, and my friend told me later that it shook him up so much that he was getting depressed and weepy.

Irrelevant of how close to the book it is, it's still a glorious example of first-rate storytelling. During the first few minutes of the film, I was able to see John for what he was supposed to be - A mental giant, insecure and withdrawn but proud enough to come out of his shell and interact, even if it was in a limited fashion.

The movie clearly illustrates how a good movie not only requires the often-overlooked scriptwriter, but the director, actors and composer must work together in complete harmony.

Russell Crowe was awesome (it makes me wonder why he did not get the Academy Award), and Jennifer Connelly, who has up to now played mostly bit parts (but, who is one of my favorite actresses) was equally good. How does one play such parts?

People often tell me that I should be an actor, but I know that I could never do that. I'm too much ME. :) Everything I do is crafted (both consciously and subconsciously) to present the world with someone unique.

I could not, or would find it very, very hard, to lose "ME" and become someone else to the point where, like Crowe or Connelly, the character and actor become one and the same.

Amazing.

Well, then...

cruise (August 21st, 2002, 8:24 am)

I'd forgotten Jennifer Connelly was in it :P

I must admit I've only seen two films with her in...but they were both stonking. Labyrinth (obviously), and Dark City.

Well, then...

Wanderer (August 21st, 2002, 8:10 pm)

Haven't seen labyrinth, but dark city was damn cool.. :)

and oh yeah, haven't seen beautifull mind either...

HWAT?

cruise (August 21st, 2002, 10:08 pm)

You haven't seen Labyrinth?

Like, Huh? How'd you manage that one? It's only like one of the coolest and best fantasy movies ever.

Check it out, dude :P

HWAT?

Wanderer (August 22nd, 2002, 11:21 pm)

HWAT?

cruise (August 23rd, 2002, 9:27 am)

I know about the title...mis-spelling for emphasis of my surprise :P
