Thread length

Hellkeepa (August 20th, 2002, 12:02 pm)

HELLo!

Just looking over a few of the topics here, more design thingies in particular, I think we should have some sort of control on the length of the thread.

Not everyone has a good connection, and even if it's just text it's a whole lot of info being sent when opening that thread. ;-

Agree, or not?

Happy fraggin'!

Number of posts limited, or just wrap around?

I think it's going to be a rare post that gets too long...I wrap around the topics after 30, but I get annoyed with threads being split.

Pages

Hellkeepa (August 20th, 2002, 12:23 pm)

HELLo!

I was thinking of pages, or what you'd call them.

No splitting of threads, or limitations on numbers of posts (which is essentially the same).

Happy fraggin'!

While we are here...

Semirrahge (August 20th, 2002, 8:00 pm)

I would like to break with years of forum tradition and have new postings at the TOP of the list. I assume that they go on the bottom simply because that's how it's always been done, and not because it's easier?

This too, would save on bandwidth (yeah, Hellkeepa, you're not alone!).

While we are here...

Ben (August 21st, 2002, 1:45 am)

I disagree -- that'll make it hard for people who want to browse the whole thread for the first time. Maybe Cruise could make it one of the options, but it should be turned off by default.

While we are here...

Semirrahge (August 21st, 2002, 3:06 am)

That's a good idea... This site is all about options, right? :)

While we are here...

cruise (August 21st, 2002, 8:25 am)

I can do that easy enough. :P

See?

cruise (August 23rd, 2002, 12:40 pm)

Done...in the same place you specify your style, you can select whether threads are ordered by the oldest or newest.

Enjoy, y'all :P

cruise does it again!

Narainsbrain (August 23rd, 2002, 4:05 pm)

i haven't gone and tried it, and in cruisian tradition it probably has some 'lazy way' issues :p ...but i like the idea quite a lot =)

That's fine, although...

Hellkeepa (August 23rd, 2002, 6:48 pm)

HELLo!

Well, I just tested it out, and while I prefer it the way it originally was I won't refuse others to choose. ;-)

However, there haven't been done something about the actual length of the topics yet, and that's a bit, what should I say, disappointing..

The thread I mentioned in the first post does not only take a substantial time to load, but it's also takes a LOT of scrolling to get down to the unseen posts. While the second issue could, and perhaps should (?), be resolved by adding a "go to the last post" feature there is still the loading time to consider.

I don't know how it is in the thread listing, but I suspect something of the same there..? If that is the case, I pity those who are not blessed with high-speed internet access. Especially those with modems. 8-/

So please, can this be resovled in any manner?

Happy fraggin'!

Semirrahge (August 24th, 2002, 1:23 am)

Ok, cool... A few things:

You mispelled "newest", in the sorting options (you wrote "newset" instead), and this is really strange! Heh. It might take a bit to get used to it... But... :)

Thread length

Narainsbrain (August 24th, 2002, 5:57 am)

well, the 'more design thingies' thread is really a freak occurence, so it shouldn't be a problem. most other threads aren't more than a couple dozen posts long. besides, self-regulation is coming into play now: we've just decided to take the whole off-topic discussion to another new thread, so (hopefully) m.d.t. shouldn't grow any longer.

Thread length

cruise (August 24th, 2002, 8:29 am)

Yup, my points exactly. And, as already stated, the /thread/ listing will wrap around. Just the actual thread itself doesn't.

I keep mispelling "newest" like that damnit...

Thread length

Narainsbrain (August 26th, 2002, 11:47 am)

um... what do you mean about 'thread listings' wrapping around? do you mean you delete links to threads older than the latest 30?

Thread length

cruise (August 27th, 2002, 4:43 pm)

No, they just have a separate page. We'll probably see it happening pretty soon.... :P

Semirrahge edit: Sorry, that "separate" with an "e" was bugging me... And I don't do this enough... :)
Ben edit: corrected Semi's HTML =)

One little thing

Narainsbrain (September 8th, 2002, 4:43 am)

Hey Cruise, this reversed-post thing is fantastic. Especially for the Aye of Faith thread, which is rapidly approaching MDT-length. =)

But here's an idea: why not put the Post form right at the top, just before the latest post, to complete the symmetry? It's historically kept at the end 'cause you don't want people posting without reading the last post, but now that the last post is, uh, first, it's not an issue anymore. Once I see that the new posts have been loaded, I want to be able to hit Esc and free up some bandwidth without worrying that I won't be able to reply without the Post form.

Thread length

cruise (September 9th, 2002, 6:08 pm)

Yeah, was thinking the same...I'll see when I can get to it :P

heh

Ben (September 10th, 2002, 11:38 pm)

I turned it on for the Aye of Faith thread and forgot to turn it off when I'd finished and was completely and totally confused for about 5 minutes. :)

test

cruise (September 16th, 2002, 11:33 am)

Just seeing if my reply-at-top feature is working...

*edit* w00t! *edit*

Thank you, Cruise!

Narainsbrain (September 17th, 2002, 7:00 am)

This is great!

But the subject line is empty, instead of defaulting to the last post's subject.

Oh, and could you add a +5:30 GMT offset in my settings?

Much obliged. =)

I know..

cruise (September 17th, 2002, 9:08 am)

I spotted that, but I didn't have the time to look into why it wasn't working...I'll get round to it.

*sigh* yeah, ok...when I get a chance, I'll add half-hour increments to the time zones...

Well...

Narainsbrain (September 17th, 2002, 12:22 pm)

...Maybe you don't need to /add/ all the half-hour increments, just India's +5:30. I don't think there are many countries apart from India with a time zone offset that isn't a whole number of hours.

cruise (September 17th, 2002, 3:15 pm)

Yeah, but I just generate the values from a loop...it's a bit of a pain having to chuck in an odd half-hour timezone in the middle of that.

Why couldn't ya live somewhere with a sensible timezone? :P

Fix here:

Hellkeepa (September 17th, 2002, 10:09 pm)

HELLo!

What about this then?

if ($Run == 5) {

$TimeZones[] = 5.5;

}

That wouldn't be a pain, would it? ;-)

PS: What's the "?>" doing at the bottom of this page, missed something while coding..? :-

Happy fraggin'!

Pain=Ugly

cruise (September 19th, 2002, 3:24 pm)

I'm a fussy coder...I like my code to look nice :P

That's a hack.

A small one, yeah, but it's still a hack in my book... :P

And of course the fact that the timezone offset is specified as an integer in the DB, so it won't accept 5.5...so I'd have to change that too. :P

Just making sure you know how much of a pain you are NB :D

'tis done, anyway...

$code['nice-lkg'] != $code['useful'] // :p

Narainsbrain (September 20th, 2002, 4:01 am)

Well, not really, I'm a pretty fussy coder myself. At least, I was, the last time I coded, which was, um, oh so long ago... I can't believe that when I saw HK's post I didn't remember variables in PHP had $-signs before them.

Bleagh, I'm diverging again.

Okay, so I'm a pain, is it? I want to toss you a witty retort to that, but I just can't think of anything, so I guess I'll stay a pain. Whaddaya say to that, eh? :p
