Front page design attempted and submitted to dA at www.deviantart.com/deviation/1187326 for feedback. Check it out and let me know what you think.

New and improved: www.deviantart.com/deviation/1207972.

I'm back! Did anyone miss me? :D I'll catch up on the fora later, I just squeezed in enough time right now to post this:
www.deviantart.com/deviation/1264607 (dA has been acting up with this somehow; it sometimes barfs up an Invalid Deviation error, but reloading the page usually fixes that)
I'm getting quite fed up with this whole splash page business, you know. =p No more major changes!
...Hmm, that doesn't have the same ring as "This is final!" but I really can't say that, can I? ;)
(February 3rd, 2003, 10:38 am)
I missed you. and everyone else. it's been so quiet here the past few days.
(February 3rd, 2003, 8:25 pm)
Yeah, it's been dead for a couple of days now, quite boring too. :-/
Anyway, I like that side VERY much: It's almost perfect! Only thing I have to comment upon is that the circles should perhaps have been a bit less apparent, but more opaque, if you know what I mean?
(February 3rd, 2003, 9:05 pm)
ha!!! circles "grumble"
(February 4th, 2003, 4:52 am)
Yeah, traffic at the TsfE fora does tend to die down periodically, no one knows why...
About the circles, Siedhr, Cruise has vetoed you out ("The circles rule...pay no attention to siedhr :p"), so HA! =p Not that I hate you though ;D
HK's suggestion sounds more do-able... And I think I did get what you mean. =) Once I get a few more people's opinion on beta3, I'll do that, and then I guess I'll have to put up the FOURTH version. (Jeez!)
(February 4th, 2003, 4:57 am)
Just so you know, there's one little hitch with the page: Opera 6 doesn't support negative text indentation, so the story names won't jut out from the margin like they do so nicely in IE6 and O7. Oh well. It's not a critical problem, it'll just take the aesthetic factor down a notch or two.
(February 4th, 2003, 2:33 pm)
I forgot to mention it there, but while i don't have a problem with the idea of circles themselves, I don't think they look that well splattered all over the page. I use ie6 and it looks like a dirty screen. what i meant was they look good but not superimposed on those lines like a freeway. in other words, circles look good, it's just their position.
(February 7th, 2003, 6:05 am)
Man, sorry, but...
I strongly dislike the circles. They make it too busy. Sorry. :)
(February 8th, 2003, 7:50 am)
Two days before the publish date, I get this. Whoopee.
This is what I'm going to do: I'm going to send Cruise the HTML source and half a dozen versions of the background - with circles, without circles, with columns, with nothing at all, and whatever else I can think of. I leave it to him to choose which one he wants to put up.
So stop bugging me, you fickle pack of critics! :D
(February 8th, 2003, 12:12 pm)
Hehe, I get to pick, we're having circles :D
MUHAHAHAHAHA!! THE POWER!!!!
Nah, seriously, I'll see what looks best...it might not be circles :P
(February 11th, 2003, 3:07 am)
I think the names of books reviewed should be in italics, and the author should be mentioned as "by Anthony Hope".
And the reader login might as well say "logged in as Narainsbrain"
And where's Semi? And why hasn't he published any story?
(February 11th, 2003, 2:54 pm)
Semi has moved out and onto a new job. he's been probably too busy.
and speaking of the new issue, why (at the non-fiction bits) does it appear as they have comments and when you look there isn't one? (did that make sense, bad english)
(February 13th, 2003, 10:39 pm)
My bad...the only time I get to test the publishing script is when we publish, so it's only had two test runs so far, and there's still some problems with it :P
I fixed everything I noticed at the time, but I missed a few things :P
(February 14th, 2003, 5:47 am)
"two test runs." :D Don't you do mock runs or something?
And come to think of it, Ben and Eldritch have been pretty scarce as well... And I had a good reason for being offline last week too. Why is this happening all at publish time? =)
(February 14th, 2003, 7:42 pm)
It's not like people didn't know when it was ahppening...we all had two months notice.
For the record (and please notice this is on a public forum, so we can't delay it with impunity :P), the next release /will/ be on the second Sunday of April (whichever date that is).
That is two months from now, again...so get your writing boots on y'all...
(February 15th, 2003, 4:36 am)
It's the Thirteenth of April. Mark your priorganisers. (As if Cruise won't keep reminding everybody anyway =)
(February 16th, 2003, 9:30 am)
Cruise, you gonna use those Thoughts I had on February 11th, 2003? I refer to when I said
the names of books reviewed should be in italics, and the author should be mentioned as "by Anthony Hope".
(February 16th, 2003, 9:03 pm)
The trouble with the "by" thingy is that sometimes you need to put a little more info in than just the Author, and if I automatically put "by" in front of it, then sometimes it will look very strange and wrong...
(February 17th, 2003, 11:54 am)
Actually, what's strange and wrong is entering the author's name into a field named 'Comments'. =p Not to mention seeing, to take an example, "Colours in the Steel by Cruise" in the submissions area, when Colours in the Steel is actually by K. J. Parker. THAT's strange. And wrong.
I think we should have a separate field for book author, which will be ignored if the submission isn't a review. Then you can join the two in the display like "The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope by Semirrahge." Or just make people enter the author's name in the title, so no assembly required.
To be very honest, I'm not sure about either solution. But hey, it's a start =) You'll notice I'm still very gung-ho about italics, since they indicate the title in question names something someone ELSE has written. I feel weird seeing "Hard Sell by Ben" when I know he wrote no such thing.
